in fact, jimmy has said obama regained everything he lost during the debate. what's your thought about that? it says these numbers are helping him. >> well, i think that's right. he's been saying on the campaign trail give me four more years and i'll really get this economy in gear and now he can point to something that justifies that message. the key is you already see voters in polls saying they think the economy is getting better. here this number advances that argument. it's a big boost. what you didn't hear romney say today is what he's been saying for years, that the unemployment rate is above 8% for 44 months. that talking point is done. it's over and it's going to be a little hard for him to make that economic case. >> let me say something about this, though. i looked back at the data four years ago, exactly four years ago -- i'm sorry, eight years ago. the democrats ran against the bush economy. do you know what the unemployment rate was in october of 2004? it was 5.5%. there's a big deference between a 55.5% -- >> igor, 7.8% unemployment ain't much t

both of talented debaters. obama has some advantages. he's debated in the general election stage before. romney has the advantage of having simply debated more over the last year. so i think it's kind of an even stage there, but the situation is not comparable to reagan versus carter. the economic metrics when carter was running for re- election were extremely negative, much more negative than they are today, and just this last week, polls show that the pub has more confidence in the president's economic views and vision and program than romney. so he has lost the one advantage that he once had. secondly, there were a lot of independent, undecided voters in 1980 who had lost faith in carter and were just waiting to see if they could feel confidence in his challenger. there are so few independent voters. this is an election that's about mobilizing the bases. so going after the independent voter is not a big surprise. having said all that in the memo put out by david axelrod -- >> who is who? >> he's the campaign guru on the obama side. >>

nothing that i expected, did mitt romney win the debate or obama lose the beabt? >> both. i thought the president was unfocused, he was, at times, not clear in the answers, but governor romney showed me during a side of the personality not seen before. he was likable, yes, but decisive, clear, and he moved to the center appealing to inexcellents and moderates. gerri: showing up in the numbers too. steven, you were on hand for for obama today, what did they say? >> they took 12 hours to figure out what the spin was because it was not ready last night. they were late getting to the spin room last night in denver. they settled on a line which was mitt romney might have looked good and sounded good, but everything said was false. he was lying one after another after another. what was interesting on the conference calls, they didn't give much supporting evidence. it's one thing to make the claim, but another to support it in a way to convince the people you're listening to. president obama might be able to do that on the campaign trail talking to partisan democratic audiences,
